The death toll in the Netrokona trawler capsize incident rose to 18 as one more body was recovered from Rajali Kanda haor on Thursday.

Fire Service divers recovered the body of Mawlana Rakibuddin, 20, at around 9:45am.

Four of the deceased were identified as- Shafiqul Islam, 40, a teacher of Gridhan Tenga Jamiul Ulum Madrassah of Netrokona, his son Samal, 10, Lubna Akhter, 10, and Zulfa Akhter, 7, daughters of Wares Uddin, a teacher of Charsirta Maksuda Sunnah Hafizia Madrasa of Mymensingh.

Earlier on Wednesday (August 5), 17 people drowned after a trawler, carrying 48 teachers and students of the two madrasas, capsized around 12pm in Rajali Kanda haor under Madan upazila of Netrokona.

Ramijul Haque, officer-in-charge (OC) of Madan police station, students and teachers of the two madrasas were visiting a tourist spot there. They hired a trawler for sightseeing but inclement weather capsized the boat turning the journey into a tragedy. 

Some 30 people managed to swim ashore. However, 19 others drowned. Later, bodies of 17 people, including six children, were retrieved from the hoar, he said.

A rescue operation is underway as one person still remain missing, said the OC.
