Those involved in attacking navy official to face the law: Home minister Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Monday said those who were involved in attacking the naval officer will be brought to the book regardless of their identities.

The minister made the remarks while talking to reporters at his residence in Dhanmondi.

The minister said: "If anyone commits a crime, he will be punished. No matter who they are or whether they are public representative, everyone has to face the law."

Meanwhile, the Rapid Action Battalion has taken Irfan Salim, a councilor of ward 30 of Dhaka South City Corporation and son of Dhaka-7 lawmaker Haji Mohammad Salim, into their custody for assaulting Navy official Lt Wasif Ahmed Khan in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area on Sunday night.

RAB (legal and media wing) Director Lt Col Ashique Billah said it to reporters on Monday afternoon.

He also said that Irfan Salim and his boduguard Zahid were not arrested but taken into custody temporarily.

RAB members conducted a raid at Haji Salim's residence in Old Dhaka around 12:30 pm Monday.

Earlier on Monday morning, the victim Wasif filed the case with Dhanmondi police station. After the case filing, police arrested the driver of the vehicle.

Dhanmondi police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) MD Ikram Ali told Banglanews: "The case was filed against Irfan Salim, his bodyguard Mohammad Zahid, car driver Mizanur Rahman, Haji Salim's Madina Group Protocol Officer AB Siddique Dipu and unnamed three others."

According to case statements, Wasif along with wife was going to his destination by a motorcycle Sunday evening. As the vehicle of Haji Salim hit the motorbike at Kalabagan intersection area, he stopped the vehicle and confronted its driver and passengers.

Wasif also disclosed his identity being an officer of Bangladesh Navy.  At one stage, some people came out the vehicle and started beating Lt Wasif and his wife as she protested the incident. Other people and commuters rushed to the spot and captured a video of whole incident by mobile phone. The video went viral on social media.
