A Manikganj court sentenced five people to death for killing a former union parishad member at Phulhara village in Ghior upazila of Manikgnaj on June 18, 2013.

The death row convicts are: Manjur Rahman, Moazzem Hossaihn, Babul Mia, Azizul Haque and Feli Begum, all of them hailing from the same area.

Besides, 13 accused were acquitted in the case.

Judge Shahana Haque Siddique of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court handed down the verdict on Tuesday at 1:00 pm in presence of the convicts.

Public Prosecutor Afsarul Islam Moni confirmed the matter.

According to prosecution, the convicts hacked and beaten former UP member Ashraf Ali over land dispute on June 16, 2013, leaving him seriously injured.

He succumbed to his wounds at a hospital in the capital later in the day.

Munsur Alam, the victim's brother, filed a murder case against 25 people at Ghior police station.
