PM Sheikh Hasina congratulates Mamata Banerjee

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has congratulated Mamata Banerjee on her party Trinamool Congress' historic win in West Bengal assembly elections 2021 and for taking oath as chief minister for the third consecutive times.

In a message, Sheikh Hasina said: "The landslide victory of the Trinamool in the elections is a reflection of the deep confidence of the people of West Bengal in you."

She also said: "India is a true friend of Bangladesh. In particular, Bangladesh's relationship with the people of West Bengal is very close and heartfelt."

"At this stage of the global coronavirus pandemic, we are committed to working together to overcome the crisis on the basis of friendly regional cooperation," said the premier.

"I hope that Bangladesh's relations with West Bengal will become closer and closer in the coming days with the aim of building a more prosperous future for the people of the two Bengals," the PM added.

Mamata Banerjee took oath as the chief minister of West Bengal for her third consecutive term on Wednesday after winning the high-stakes West Bengal Assembly elections on May 2.

After eight rounds of polling in the state, the votes were counted and results announced on May 2. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had set a target of winning more than 200 seats out of the 294-member assembly, won 77 seats while the TMC won 213 seats.
