Former President Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed has passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 92.
He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka at 10:25 am, said Supreme Court spokesperson Mohammad Saifur Rahman.
He had been suffering from old-age complications for the last several years.
Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique expressed his profound shock at the death of Shahabuddin and prayed for the salvation of the departed soul.
Former chief justice (CJ) Shahabuddin Ahmed led the caretaker government after the fall of Ershad and held a national election in February 1991.
He resumed his duties on 10 October 1991 as the Chief Justice from which office he retired on 1 February 1995.
Shahabuddin Ahmed was made President after Awami League came to power in 1996.
