Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh is planning to keep shops and shopping malls closed after 8 pm to revive the discipline in Dhaka.
He made the remarks at a press conference held at Nagar Bhaban on Monday (May 16) marking the two-year anniversary of his tenure as mayor.
"Without fast action, we have no other option as Dhaka already lost its living capacity. The waste management and sewerage activities here are also being hampered. To solve these issues we have to shut all business activities after 8 pm," the mayor said.
As per the plan, only food shops will remain open till 10 pm. In addition, essential services, including drug stores, will be able to keep them open at their convenient times, the mayor added.
Citing that the world's big and developed cities close their business activities by 8-9 pm. "However, we have to follow this system to bring back discipline in Dhaka," Taposh said.
According to Mayor Taposh, if the shops are closed after 8 pm, the traffic jam will be brought under control. "There are several other good aspects of this. If we can make it work, we can give more time to our families," he added.
Taposh also said, "I want this initiative to be effective from now on. But that is not possible. Everyone's cooperation is needed for this."
