Dreaming of a new prosperous Bangladesh

The July-August revolution ended over 15 years of misrule, exploitation, and oppression. On 5 August 2024, the flight of the tyrant Sheikh Hasina liberated the common people from immense suffering. Bangladeshis learned to smile again, daring to dream once more.

This dream envisions a new Bangladesh—a reformed, prosperous nation. Historically, our politics have been plagued by autocratic rule every few years, largely due to contradictory constitutional provisions.

Article 39(1) of the Constitution's third part guarantees freedom of thought and conscience. However, Article 70(b) in the fifth part states that if a member elected as a candidate of a political party votes against that party in Parliament, their seat will become vacant. This clause undermines the freedom of expression for Members of Parliament, forcing them to align with party decisions, thus facilitating autocracy.

In a country where elected representatives lack freedom of expression, the general populace's opinions are further marginalized. Therefore, it's imperative to reform this clause to ensure all MPs can express their views freely. Additionally, limiting individuals to two terms as Prime Minister is essential to prevent power from becoming family-centric, ensuring leadership is based on merit and public trust.

Ensuring fair elections is crucial in the new Bangladesh. We must prevent any party from manipulating electoral boundaries for undue advantage and eliminate the corrupt practice of vote-buying. Laws should ensure that only qualified, ethical, educated, and patriotic individuals assume power, fostering a leadership committed to national progress.

Post-July-August revolution, we aspire for Bangladesh to advance across all sectors, elevating our national flag proudly on the global stage.
