DHAKA: At least 60 people were held and 32 were injured in separate incidents in different parts of the country on Tuesday as the 84-hour nonstop countrywide hartal is progressing for third consecutive day.
The BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance is enforcing the shutdown on demand of polls-time non-party caretaker government and in protest against the detention of central BNP leaders.
Injured, Held
In Gazipur, at least 12 people were injured, two BNP leaders by bullets, in a clash between hartal supporters and police in Tongi area of the district.
Meanwhile, police detained nine people including the two bullet-injured BNP leaders.
In Noakhali, at least 20 people were injured in a chase and counter chase between cop and pickets at Khalifarhat bazaar of the district.
In Barisal, police held 11 people from various spots of the district while picketing.
In Jhalakathi, police held five BNP and Chhatara Dal activists from the district during the hartal.
In Bhola, police held eight BNP men from various places of the district.
In Natore, police detained ward Jamaat president for his involvement in subversive act in the district.
In Satkhira, seven BNP-Jamaat men were held for subversive acts in the district.
In Joypurhat, police in separate drives held eight Jamaat-Shibir men from three upazilas of the district.
In Chittagong, police detained four picketers in Baropol area under Halishahar Thana of the district at around 11:30am.
In Chandpur, police held seven people including ward Juba Dal president Abul Kalam Sheikh in the district.
Cocktails explosion
In Jatrabari, activists of Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat, brought out a sudden procession Bibir Bagicha area at around 7:00am.
They exploded eight cocktails and set on fire at five vehicles.
In Old Dhaka, pickets exploded five cocktails in Ray Shaheb Bazar area at around 9:00am while three cocktails were blasted in Progati Sarani at around 3:00pm.
In Jhenidah, police recovered nine fresh cocktails from district town at around 9:00am.
In Chittagong, pickets hurled two cocktails in Halishahar area of the port city at around 11:30am.
Hartal supporters set on fire to a passenger bus of Suprovat Paribahan in capital’s Madya Badda at around 7:00am.
2nd day’s hartal violence
On the second day of shutdown, hartal supporters torched and vandalized vehicles, blasted cocktails in most of the divisional cities and districts including capital Dhaka.
Pickets blasted cocktails at Shahbagh, Bijoynagar, Hatirjheel, Shahjadpur, Fakirapool, Mahakhali and different areas of the capital.
First day’s hartal violence
A man was killed and 40 others were injured in separate hartal violence in several districts of the country on Sunday.
Besides, law enforcers detained 28 people including office secretary of Narayanganj city BNP, general secretary of Munshiganj city Chhatra Dal and general secretary of Brahmanbaria district unit BNP from different parts of the country.
Police, however, seized 156 fresh hand grenades in Kanthalbagan area of the city on Sunday night.
At least 30 cocktails were hurled towards the police forces in Paltan, Karwan Bazar, Kalabagan and Nabisco Intersection of the city.
