CHITTAGONG: At least 20 people were injured as local BNP activists clashed with police personnel at Sitakunda upazila in the district on Saturday.
The injured were admitted to different hospitals of the area.
Witness said activists of local unit BNP brought out a procession in the area around 4:20pm as part of the party’s central programme. While police tried to disperse the gathering, opposition activists locked into fierce clash with law-enforcers.
Police opened fire rubber bullets, lobbed teargas shells and charged batons on the BNP-Jamaat activists, leaving 20 people injured.
Later, the BNP men vandalized 10-12 vehicles and set fire to 7-8 others which disrupted vehicular movement on Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
The unruly opposition activists also vandalized 40 vehicles and put blockade at Fauzdarhat, Barabkundu, Kumira, Botola and Banubazar, creating a long tailback on the busy highway.
Vehicular movement on the highway did not return to normalcy till filing of this report around 7:00pm.
Chittagong police super AKM Hafiz Akhter told banglanews that the situation has been brought under control as additional RAB, police to avert further untoward situation.
