Jamaat hartal underway

DHAKA: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami called dawn-to-dust hartal (shutdown) across the country for Monday in protest against the “planned political killing of the government”.

Acting Secretary General of the party Dr Shafiqur Rahman made the disclosure in a press release on Sunday evening.

Party sources said the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued death warrant for Abdul Quader Molla and they wanted to inhibit the execution through stern movement.

However, Jamaat will also participate the third phase of blockade called by 18-party alliance.

Earlier in the day, the International Crimes Tribunal issued the death warrant for war criminal Abdul Quader Molla.

On February 5, Quader Molla was the first person to have been sentenced to lifetime imprisonment by the war crimes tribunal.

Later, the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973 was amended in light of widespread protests towards providing an equal scope of appeal for prosecution and defense.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court revised the sentence for Quader Molla to death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of Bangladesh.
