Elections after necessary reforms: Fakhrul

Elections would be held after necessary reforms within the state apparatus are completed, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told reporters Thursday after holding a meeting with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus.

Mirza Fakhrul and two other BNP leaders met the interim government chief on his request at the state guesthouse Jamuna in the capital.

The Fakhrul-led BNP delegation included party's standing committee members Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Salahuddin Ahmed.

Planning and Education Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud and Law Adviser Prof Asif Nazrul were also present during the over an hour-long meeting.

Over the past couple of days, BNP senior leaders had repeatedly said that the party would give the interim government a logical deadline for reforming the state institutions before holding elections, but not indefinite period.

They had also called on the government for presenting a roadmap on reforming the state apparatus and holding elections.

Replying to a question if the date for election came up for discussion in Thursday's meeting, Fakhrul said, “We’ve not discussed any date (for holding election). We won't say the date. It is they [interim government] who will say it."

He said there will be talks with political parties in phases.
