BNP hails reform plan, urges for quick implementation

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has hailed the reform plans announced by Interim Government leader Prof Muhammad Yunus and urged him to ensure its swift implementation paving the path of the next general election.

“I expect that the interim government chief would implement the reform plans as early as possible and then move forward to hold a national election,” he said while addressing a press conference held at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in Dhaka on Thursday.

Earlier on Wednesday, while addressing the nation, Prof Yunus outlined a reform plan appointing Badiul Alam Majumdar as head of the Election Reform Commission, Sarfraz Chowdhury of the Police Administration Reform Commission, Justice Shah Abu Naeem Mominur Rahman of the Judiciary Reform Commission, Dr Iftekharuzzaman of the Anti-Corruption Reform Commission, Abdul Mueed Chowdhury of the Public Administration Reform Commission and Dr Shahdeen Malik as head of the Constitution Reform Commission.

Claiming that the chief adviser in his speech has projected his government's mission, he said BNP has consistently been raising its voice for reform in the interest of the country’s democracy and political stability.

“We are committed to giving adequate time to the interim government for the reforms. We hope that the government would finish the reform as soon as possible,” he said.

Wishing the all-out success of the interim government, the interim government came to power after violent political unrest led to an unceremonious end to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's 15-year rule.

“There is no alternative but to democracy. Democracy is the only system that reflects the people’s aspirations,” said the BNP leader urging the six dignitaries, who have been made heads of the six reform commissions, to realise the people’s pulses in conducting the reforms.
