Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Tarique Rahman, today emphasized the importance of holding fair elections to sustain democracy.

“We must ensure a free and fair election to preserve the country’s democracy,” he stated in a message commemorating Shaheed Jehad Day.

Nazir Uddin Ahmed Jehad, a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activist from Ullapara Upazila in Sirajganj, was shot dead in Dhaka on October 10, 1990, during the anti-Ershad movement.

“A non-partisan caretaker government during election time is essential to ensure a free and fair election,” Rahman stressed.

He further added, “Democracy is not just about elections; it also involves restoring people’s freedom and fundamental rights.”

“Guided by the spirit of Shaheed Jehad, we must work together to restore democracy and safeguard the country’s independence and sovereignty,” he said.

Rahman also urged collective efforts to thwart any conspiracies by “evil forces” both within the country and abroad.

Paying tribute to Jehad, the BNP leader stated that the sacrifice of the BNP activist during the movement against Ershad's regime in 1990 is unforgettable.

“The movement was aimed at re-establishing multi-party democracy, and the freedom of speech and the press,” Rahman said.

He further noted that the autocratic rule of Ershad had destroyed democracy, which Jehad was determined to restore, ultimately sacrificing his life for the cause.

“His soul will not rest if we fail to achieve his dream,” Rahman remarked.
