Mahmudur Rahman acquitted in Joy murder attempt case

A Dhaka court on Monday acquitted Amar Desh Editor Mahmudur Rahman in a case related to the attempted abduction and murder of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed Joy in the US in 2015.

Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Tarik Ezaz delivered the verdict in response to an appeal filed by Mahmudur on December 12 last year. He had sought relief from the “unjust” seven-year prison sentence handed down in August 2023.

In the previous ruling, journalist Shafiq Rahman and three others were also sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment in a court allegedly manipulated by the then fascist Awami League regime.

On 29 September last year, following the ouster of Awami League government, Mahmudur surrendered before the court and was sent to prison. On 3 October, he secured bail.

On 3 August 2015, Fazlur Rahman, an inspector of detective branch of police, filed a case in this regard.

According to the case statement, from September 2011-August 2015, leaders of BNP and its allied political parties, held discussions in various parts of the country, the US and UK to hatch a plot to kidnap and kill US-resident Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of then prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
