DHAKA: LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam on Monday said the local government polls would be held under party banners in future.

“The government is thinking to arrange the local government elections under party banners in line with the general election,” he said.

The ruling Awami League lawmaker came up with the assertion while addressing a programme of Mirpur Thana council in city.

Syed Ashraf also said the law wound be amended soon in this regard.

He added: “There are two separate laws in the country regarding polls. The prime minister has given order to arrange all sorts of elections including union parishad, municipality, upazila and city corporation polls under a single law.”

The minister gave examples of the election laws of USA, UK and other western countries in favour of his comments.
