BNP wants elections to protect nation, not to go to power: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir reiterated that BNP’s call for elections was not driven by a desire for power but by the need to protect the nation’s independence, sovereignty, and democracy.

Fakhrul was speaking to reporters after paying respects at the mausoleum of BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman on the occasion of Independence Day this morning (March 26).

Expressing disappointment over the chief adviser's address to the nation on Independence Day, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said it failed to address the crucial issue of an electoral roadmap.

He said: “We were expecting the announcement of an election roadmap, but there was no mention of it in the speech. We are disheartened.”

He further criticized the Sheikh Hasina's government, accusing it of using force, killings, and disappearances to cling to power.

“This fascist government has subjected the nation to oppression, and it is our hope that an interim government will swiftly carry out the necessary reforms to ensure a fair election,” Fakhrul added.

Reflecting on the government’s failure to acknowledge the contributions of President Ziaur Rahman, Fakhrul said that the speech made no mention of the late president or his role in the liberation of the nation.

“It’s clear that the previous ruling party has distorted history. We want the truth to be revealed so that the country can move forward with the democratic government the people desire,” he said.

The BNP leader concluded with a message of hope, wishing the nation a happy Independence Day and expressing optimism for a return to true democracy in the near future.
