Ex-MP Morshed Alom denied bail, sent to jail

A Dhaka court has ordered the imprisonment of former Member of Parliament and Bengal Group Chairman Morshed Alom in connection with the murder of a student named Md Shamim in the capital’s Dhanmondi area.

Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza passed the order on Wednesday (April 9), rejecting Morshed Alom’s bail petition after a hearing.

According to court sources, Alom was produced before the court following his arrest. The investigating officer, PBI Sub-Inspector Shahin Mia, sought his detention until the investigation is complete. Alom’s lawyer appealed for bail, which was opposed by Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki. After hearing both sides, the court denied bail and sent him to jail.

Earlier, Alom was arrested by detectives on Tuesday night from the Gulshan area.

The case stems from a protest rally against discrimination held on August 5 last year. Md Shamim, a 13-year-old student, joined the march in Dhanmondi. When the procession reached Kalabagan, it came under sudden attack by activists of the Awami League and its affiliated bodies, according to the complaint. Shamim was seriously injured and later died at Suhrawardy Hospital on August 6.

On October 3, the victim’s mother Jahanara Begum filed a murder case with Dhanmondi Police Station, naming 128 people including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Morshed Alom was listed as the 87th accused in the case.
