HC sets May 21 for Ishraque mayor gazette plea

High Court (HC) has fixed Wednesday (May 21) for order on a writ petition seeking a stay on the gazette issued by the Election Commission declaring BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

The bench of Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury set the date on Tuesday (May 20).

Lawyer Mohammad Hossain stood for the petitioner in the case. Lawyers A M Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Kaiser Kamal represented Ishraque Hossain.

Earlier, supporters of opposition BNP leader Ishraque Hossain continued their sit-in protest for the sixth consecutive day today, demanding his official declaration as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

Hundreds of demonstrators, including former councillors, leaders and activists from the Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal, Mahila Dal, and Sramik Dal, gathered under the banner of ‘Dhakabasi’ (Residents of Dhaka), chanting slogans and carrying placards calling for Ishraque Hossain’s recognition as mayor.

Protesters also demanded the resignation of DSCC advisor Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, vowing to intensify their demonstrations unless their demands are met.
