FROM COURT: A Dhaka court denied the appeal of time-extension of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust embezzlement cases.
Khaleda Zia’s lawyer Taherul Islam Tauhid appealed to the third special judge court at Wednesday noon in city.
The judge rejected the time-extension in the cases. The order followed a chaos on court premises.
Meanwhile, pro-BNP lawyers tried to attack the judge and at one stage, the judge left the court room.
Earlier, BNP chairperson appeared before the special judge court in older section of Dhaka around 12:00pm.
BNP Joint Secretary General Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, also a lawyer of Khaleda Zia, confirmed the matter to banglanews.
The High Court decision on a plea to cancel the cases by the accused remained pending. So, lawyers of the accused sought more time for indictment hearing, Advocate Sanaullah said.
The other accused of Zia Orphanage Trust Case are BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, former MP Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal and businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed.
Besides, the other accused of Zia Charitable Trust case are Ziaul Islam Munna, Monirul Islam Khan, Khaleda Zia’s forcer political affairs secretary Haris Chowdhury.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed two cases against them in 2008 and 2011 for embezzling money using the name of the charitable organizations.
