Tulip Siddiq, former UK city minister and niece of ousted Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina, has formally requested a meeting with Professor Muhammad Yunus, head of Bangladesh’s interim government currently visiting the UK.
The request was confirmed on Tuesday by Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, who noted that the letter had been received and that the matter would be addressed through appropriate legal channels.
“This is a legal issue, and it should follow legal procedures,” he told reporters.
While Siddiq did not attend a recent meeting between Professor Yunus and members of the UK Parliament, Shafiqul Alam confirmed that several British MPs of Bangladeshi descent—part of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG)—met with the Chief Adviser in London for over an hour.
According to the Press Secretary, discussions during the meeting were wide-ranging and included the ongoing Rohingya crisis, the state of political reform in Bangladesh, and the progress made by the interim government since taking office ten months ago.
Key topics included democratic transition initiatives, plans for reform commissions, and the upcoming July release of the so-called “Charter,” which is expected to outline the government's roadmap for political stability.
“The discussion was cordial and constructive,” Alam said. “The APPG members raised many questions, and the Chief Adviser responded to all of them openly.”
