DHAKA: Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld the stayed bail order to Hefazat-e-Islam leader Mufti Mohammad Wakkas in a police case over May 5 mayhem in 2013.
A five-member bench headed by chief justice Mohammad Mozammel Hossain passed the order on Monday dismissing leave to appeal by state prosecution.
On May 6 in 2013, police filed a case against Jamiat-e Ulamaye Islam secretary general and Hefazat leader Mufti Mohammad Wakkas with Motijheel Thana.
Later on February 17 in 2014, he was granted a 6-month bail.
Chamber judge stayed the order following state prosecution’s appeal regarding the High Court order.
Later, state prosecution went for leave to appeal.
On Monday, Appellate Division upheld the stay order passed by the chamber judge dismissing the leave to appeal by state prosecution.
Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain stood for Mufti Wakkas while deputy attorney general Ekramul Haque Tutul stood for state.
On September 2 in 2013, Detective Branch police arrested Wakkas from city’s Malibagh area.
