PATUAKHALI: A Union Parishad (UP) councilor was stabbed to death by some miscreants in Basak Bazar area of Sadar upazila of the district on Friday.

The deceased was identified as M Nasir Hawlader, 38, Madarbunia UP councilor and local Awami League leader, hailed from Pakhiya village of the upazila.

Witnesses said six miscreants riding two motorcycles intercepted the rickshaw of Nasir when he was returning home from Basak Bazar in the evening.

The miscreants stabbed him in his chest after pulling him down from the rickshaw, leaving him critically injured.

Locals rushed the injured to Patuakhali Sadar Hospital but the attending doctor Dilruba Yasmin Liza declared him dead on arrival.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar Thana Ziaul Haque Zia confirmed the matter to banglanews.
