Report on defamation suit against Tarique Jan 20

DHAKA: A Dhaka court on Sunday fixed January 20 for submission the report in a defamation case filed against BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman and acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Maruf Hossain fixed the new date as no report was submitted on time.

Sunday was the date for submission of the report in the case. 

On September 8, Bangladesh Jana Netri Parishad president AB Siddique the defamation case against Tarique and Fakhrul for making ‘derogatory’ comments against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and country’s first president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

According to the case statement, at a discussion on September 2, Tarique, who is now staying in London, said Ziaur Rahman was the country’s first president.

On September 5, Fakhrul said that Mujibur Rahman concluded his historic March 7, 1971 speech saying ‘Joy Pakistan’ and that he did not announced of the independence, which was published in national dailies on the following day.

Both (Tarique and Fakhrul) have distorted the country’s history and tarnished Bangabandhu’s image, making the comments,’ the statement added.
