3 cops among 5 injured in Kurigram Jamaat attack

KURIGRAM: Five people including three policemen were injured in an attack from a procession of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir at Bhogdanga Bazar area under sadar upazila of the district Tuesday morning.

The injured cops were identified as assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Kurigram Sadar Thana Nazmul and constables Anwar and Mahima Ranjan.

Police said a group of Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists brought out a procession in support of ongoing 72-hour hartal, called by BNP-led 20-party alliance, around 7:30am in Bhogdanga area.

At a stage, the hartal supporters threw brick-chips from the procession aiming at police while they were trying to disperse the procession, leaving three police personnel and two others injured.

However, police fired seven rounds of rubber bullet and one round tear gas shell to bring the situation under control, sources added.

Kurigram Sadar Thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Morshedul Karim M Ehtesham told banglanews that the injured were locally treated.

He further said that they deployed additional police forces to thwart untoward situation.
