AL yet to fix single councilor candidate

DHAKA: Ruling Awami League is yet to fix a single candidate for ward councilor posts each in the upcoming Dhaka North and South City Corporations elections.

There are 57 wards in DCC South while 36 in DCC North. The voting to elect mayor and councilors in the two city corporations will be held on April 28.

A total 533 aspirants were declared eligible to vie for councilor posts in the South City Corporation while 446 councilor aspirants in North City Corporation. Most of them are directly involved in Awami League politics and many others are holding important posts of ward committees.  

Besides, many from AL front organizations, including Juba League and Swechchasebok League, filed nomination forms.  There are many candidates from 14-party allies Workers Party, JSD, NAP and Ganatantri Party. 

Some 15 committees, comprising of central leader, local MP and Dhaka city leaders, have been formed to fix single candidate for both the city polls.

The committee members are holding meetings everyday to ensure lone candidate for each ward councilor. April 9 is the last date of withdrawal of candidacy. So, the list of lone candidates will be finalized by April 8, said leaders concerned.

When contacted, Awami League International affairs secretary Faruk Khan, also former minister, told banglanews that they are collecting information about the candidates. The party will support to the candidate who is more competent.

Dhaka city AL join general secretary Kamrul Islam, also the food minister, told banglanews that more than one candidate are willing to vie for councilor post every ward.  The party is trying to fix single candidate. The list of lone candidate will be finalized soon.
