16 BNP-Jamaat men among 157 held in 6 dists

DHAKA: At least 157 people including 16 leaders and activists of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir were detained in Dinajpur, Manikganj, Noakhali, Lalmonirhat, Panba and Jessore districts.

The drives were conducted from Monday night to Tuesday morning to avoid untoward situation.

Police detained 28, including three Jamaat-Shibir men, from various areas of Dinajpur district during the countrywide 48-hour hartal enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami.

Dinajpur police control room in-charge Constable Hafizur Rahman confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Additional police forces were also deployed at strategic points of the town, he added.

Banglanews Manikganj correspondent reported that police detained five BNP activists from sadar and Singair upazilas early Tuesday.

Special Branch of district police sub-inspector (SI) Abdul Baten told banglanews that legal actions are being taken against the detainees.

Moreover, Noakhali correspondent reported that police detained three Chhatra Shibir and BNP activists from the district.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Ilias Sharif confirmed the matter to banglanews.

He further said the detainees will be sent to the court on Tuesday noon.

Besides, they have deployed additional police at important intersections of the town, he added.

In Lalmonirhat, police arrested 24 persons including district Jubo Dal general secretary and four BNP activists.

Police arrested the Jubo Dal leader at 7:00am on Tuesday.

Lalmonirhat assistant police super (Circle) told banglanews that on tip-off, police arrested the people who were accused in different cases and remained fugitive.

At least 51 persons were detained in overnight drives conducted in Pabna on Tuesday.

Pabna assistant police super Siddiqur Rahman said that they nabbed the people on suspicion of creating violence during Jamaat called nationwide hartal.

However, police arrested 46 persons conducting nightlong drives across the district.

Jessore district police control room sources said that the arrestees were accused in different cases.
