DHAKA: Election Commission (EC) threatened to take legal action against the ministers, MPs, speaker and other government officials if they make influence in the upcoming city corporation elections.

Election Commissioner Mohammad Shahnewaz made the remark while talking to the media on Wednesday.

He said as per law, the ministers and his equivalent officers are not permitted to took part in election campaign.

Legal actions will be taken against them, if they violate the rules, he added.

According to the election codes of conduct, ministers, state ministers, deputy ministers, speaker, deputy speaker, chief whip, whip, government beneficiaries and equivalent officers, among others, are unable to participate in local elections.

However, the elections of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) will be held on April 28.
