DHAKA: The international Crimes Tribunal-2 took into the cognizance the formal charge submitted against three war crimes suspects of Habiganj for their alleged crimes against humanity during liberation war.

The tribunal also fixed July 22 to start the indictment hearing in the case.

The three-member tribunal, led by its chairman Justice Obaidul Hasna passed the orders on Sunday.

They are Mohibur Rahman alias Boro Miah and his younger brother Mozibur Rahman alias Angur Miah, their cousin Abdur Razzak.

Prosecutor Sultan Mahmud Simon stood for the state while lawyer Masud Rana moved for Mohibur-Mozibur-Razzak.

On May 17, the prosecution submitted formal charge against Habiganj Razakar trio before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2. 
 
Then, the tribunal set May 31 to pass order whether to take the four charges of crimes against humanity brought against them.

Tribunal also issued warrant for arrest of Abdur Razzk. On May 19, Baniachang police arrested him from Atangiri hill of Moulvibazar and produced him before the tribunal on May 20. On the day, the ICT sent him to jail.

The tribunal also allowed investigators to quiz the suspected siblings at its safe home on March 16 for their alleged crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.

The jail authorities have been asked to take necessary steps for providing treatment to Mahibur and Mujibur and submit a report on their heath condition on April 16, in response to a plea of defense lawyer.

On the day, prosecutors Sultam A Mahmud Simon and Rezia Sultana Chaman submitted progress report on investigation over the allegations against the duo.

Later, they also filed time petition seeking a month for submission of the final report and permission to interrogate the siblings at safe home.

On the other hand, defense lawyer Advocate Nazrul Islam filed bail petition and sought its directives to provide treatment to them in specialized hospital.

In the petition, the defense said Mahibur has been suffering from eye defeats while Majibur is high blood pressure.

The tribunal fixed April 16 for submission of final report and hearing on bail petition.

On February 10, prosecution filed a petition seeking its order to arrest the two brothers. After hearing, the tribunal issued arrest warrant angst them.

Hours after the arrest order, Habiganj detective branch of police arrested the two war crime suspects and later the tribunal sent them to jail on February 12.

Local sources said the trio formed a Razakar force in Nabiganj Thana of Habignaj and handed over freedom fighters to the Pakistani occupation force in 1971.

The trio was allegedly killed two freedom fighters Akal Mia and Rajob Ali. They also allegedly torched and looted the house of Maj Gen MA Rob, deputy commander of the pro-liberation forces.
Earlier in 2009, Akal Mia's wife Bhingraj Bibi filed a case against them with Habiganj judicial magistrate cognizance-4.

Later, the case was transferred to the International Crimes Tribunal.
