DHAKA: The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the High Court's order granting bail to BNP leader Gayeshwar Chandra Ray in a violence-related case filed with Turag Thana.
The four-member appellate division led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order.
Lawyer Nitai Roy Chowdhury said following the order, there is no bar for Gayeshwar Chandra Ray to get release on bail.
On May 6, the High Court granted bail to imprisoned BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy in a case filed with Turag Thana.
Later on May 24, the government filed an appeal to the appellate division seeking stay on the HC order that granted bail to Gayeshwar.
On December 24 of 2014, BNP activists and Chhatra League activists locked into a clash at Bakshibazar area of the city over BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s appearing before the court in Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust graft cases.
Later, a case was filed with Shahbagh Thana in city as AL lawmaker from Netrokona-1 constituency Chhabi Biswas was attacked in the clash.
