DHAKA: Death penalty to BNP standing committee member Salauddin Quader Chowdhury is an outcome of ‘political vengeance’, his party alleged in an official reaction after Supreme Court upheld ICT verdict.
In a press release singed by party’s spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon on Wednesday also termed the verdict frustrating and saddening.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court upheld the death penalty to war criminal Salauddin Quader Chowdhury for committing four crimes against humanity during Liberation War, including murder and genocide.
On October 29 of 2013, opposition BNP lawmaker SQ Chowdhury appealed against his death sentence given by ICT-1 for his involvement with war crimes during 1971.
On October 1, Justice ATM Fazle Kabir led three-member ICT-1 awarded death sentence to Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, who was found guilty of nine charges out of 23 allegations.
Out of total 23 charges, however, SQ Chowdhury was acquitted of eight charges and while the prosecution failed to prove six allegations.
