RU student politics claims 29 lives in 39 years

RAJSHAHI: Some 29 people were died and over 2000 injured in fatal 62 clashes in Rajshahi University for last 39 years since independence.  

Among the deceased, 27 were the students of different departments of the university. The university remained closed for around 600 days following the students` violence, said RU administration sources.
University authorities told banglanews24.com.bd that some 62 dreadful conflicts occurred over different issues including attack of rival students’ group, hall capturing, and factional clashes.

Clashes ensued over tender manipulation on the campus killed 27 students. Among those, eight incidents were remarkable.

Of the deceased students, 15 of Islami Chhatra Shibbir, four of Jatyatabadi Chhtra Dal, five of Bangladesh Chhatra League, two of Chhatra Moitri and one of Chhatra Union, said the competent sources.

Some 100 out of 2000 injured in different student clashes in the university became crippled permanently.
Among the bloody remarkable clashes, BCL (JASOD) man Yeasir Arafat Pintu was killed on 17 March 1992 and the then JASAS general secretary Amanullah Aman was killed in front of University central library on 6 February 1996.

Besides, Chhatra Moitri leader Jubair Hossain Rimu was killed in front of Shere-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Haque Hall in the same year.

Later, Chhatra moitri leader Rupum Bhattacharya and BCL leader Monzur Elahi were allegedly killed by the attack of Shibbir activists.

Meanwhile, Shibbir university unit general secretary Shariffuzzaman Nomani was killed on March 13, 2009.
A final-year student of Mathematics department and BCL activist Faruque Hossain was hacked to death allegedly by Shibbir men on 8 February this year that triggered a countrywide unrest.

A BCL factional clash injured its activist Nasrullah alias Nasim, a final year student of History department during token distribution of Iftar on the occasion of National Mourning Day on August 15. Later, he died in Dhaka Medical College Hospital on August 23.

Regarding the issue, Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar Tapu, student adviser of the university said he did not know details about previous killings.

He admitted that the university was affected a lot several times following the incidents. “The situation of the campus is now under the control," he informed the banglanews24.com.bd.
