AL MPs to meet CEC Sunday

DHAKA: Members of Parliament (MP) of ruling Awami League (AL) will meet chief election commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed on Sunday to discuss about municipal elections.

AL central sub-committee assistant secretary Riazul Kabir Kawser informed the matter to reporters at Election Commission (EC) secretariat in city on Saturday.

He said ruling party lawmakers will go to the EC to discuss the electoral code of conduct in upcoming municipal elections. The decision has been taken at a meeting of party forum held on Thursday.

According to electoral code, government facility recipients have been restricted in joining poll campaign.

As per the EC, Prime Minister, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Minister, Chief Whip, Opposition Leader, deputy leader of the parliament, state minister, whip, deputy minister or people of equivalent status, member of parliament (MP) and city corporation mayor will be considered as government facility recipients.

EC secretary Sirajul Islam told banglanews that Awami League lawmakers will come to the commission to meet the CEC.

‘But I would like to say, there is no scope to amend the electoral code of conduct. But the commission will sit with the AL lawmakers to fix the options about their participation in poll campaign,’ he added.

According to the schedule declared by the EC, polls will be held in 234 municipalities across the country on December 30.

However, the EC set December 3 as last date for submission of nomination forms, while December 5 and 6 for scrutinizing the forms and December 13 as last date for withdrawal of nominations.

Voters will cast the ballots at 3,582 polling centers across the country to elect 236 mayors, 2,952 councilors and 738 councilors (reserved).
