Shawkat Mahmud sent to jail after remand

DHAKA: A court on Saturday sent BNP chairperson’s adviser Shawkat Mahmud, also Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) president, to jail after completion of his 3-day remand.

Metropolitan magistrate Waez Kuruni Khan Chowdhury made the order after the detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) produced him before the court.

Earlier, a team of DMP DB held Shawkat Mahmud from in front of Samarai Convention Center on Panthapath in city around 11:00am on August 18.

Later, he was shown arrested in three cases filed for arson attack on a bus in Jatrabari and a case filed under killing and explosives act with Ramna Thana.

Chargesheets of the cases, however, were complete before showing him arrested.

On August 19, court sanctioned a three-day remand after DB police produced Shawkat before the court with a 10-day remand plea.
