BNP protests gas-power price hike

DHAKA: BNP on Saturday protested the price hike of gas and electricity, and demanded the government reduce the prices of the essential utility services.

BNP spokesperson and Foreign Affairs Secretary D Asaduzzaman Ripon also termed the government decision illogical and unacceptable at a press briefing in their central office on Saturday.

According to BNP, the decision will affect the low and middle income people badly, he added.

He also said the people will suffer from the price hike of gas for a burner more than Tk 200 though the government does not need provide subsidy to gas sector. Moreover, Petrobangla profited Tk 20,080 crore in last five years, he added.

The BNP spokesperson also said the government doses not consider the situation of the people as they were elected by vote.

The party urged the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) to revise the power tariff in accordance with falling oil prices on the international market after conducting a fresh mass hearing on it.

The government on Thursday raised the gas and powers tariff by 2.93 percent and 26.29 percent respectively on average at the consumer level with effect from September 1 next.
