JMB army wing chief among 5 held in Ctg

CHITTAGONG: Police on Monday detained five members of a banned extremist outfit, Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), including its army wing chief for Chittagong region, from their den in Karnaphuli Thana of the port city.

The detainees are army wing chief Javed, 24, Bulbul Ahmed, 26, Sujon alias Babu, 25, Mahbub and Sohel.

Deputy Commissioner of city (north-south) detective branch (DB) of police Babul Akhter led the drive that started around 6:30pm on Monday.

Babul Akhter told banglanews that acting on tip-off, they detained Mahbub and Sohel.

Later, based on their confessions, police conducted a drive at Haji Nur Ahmed Tower at Khowaznagar Azimpara Lalmia Contractor Road and detained the three others, he added.

He also said during the drive, police seized 120 rounds of bullet, nine hand grenades, a pistol and 10 knives.

All are trained members of suicide squad, Babul Akhter added.
