BNP demands referendum over local govt poll laws

DHAKA: BNP standing committee member Brigadier (Retd) ASM Hannan Shah said that a referendum is needed to take the decision of arranging the local government elections under party banner.

The BNP leader made this demand at a discussion on Dr Piash Karim’s first death anniversary at National Press Club auditorium in city on Tuesday.

Regarding the allegation of militancy in Bangladesh, the Hannan Shah commented that he does not know about the presence of militancy in the country.

‘If there is militancy in Bangladesh, it is Awami militancy,’ he remarked pointing to the ruling Awami League.

Swadinata Forum president Abu Naser Mohammad Rahmatullah chaired the program attended by Professor Emajuddin Ahmed, Dr Mahbubullah and Moazzem Hosain Alal, among others.
