Jamaat can’t join local govt polls

DHAKA: Jamaat-e-Islami is not getting any chance to participate in the next local government polls to be held under the party banner.

Authorities concerned said that the party’s registration was declared illegal by the court and it is not registered with Election Commission (EC).

They said that no candidate will be allowed to use the party’s symbol of ‘daripalla’. But anybody will be allowed to contest the elections as an independent candidate.

EC election management branch sources said that as many as 40 political parties are registered with the commission.

Jamaat-e-Islami has been considering as a non-registered party since 2013 as its registration was declared illegal by the High Court following the writ petition by Bangladesh Tarikat Federation general secretary Maulana Syed Rezaul Haque and others.
