Verdicts reach central jail

DHAKA: The full and final verdicts of death row war crimes convicts BNP leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdury and Jamaat-e-Isalmi secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid have been taken to the central jail in city on Thursday night.

International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) deputy registrar Aftabuzzaman, senior law research official Qaiyum Faisal, disperse raider Sirajul Islam and librarian Tapas Chandra and office assistant Abu Musa took the verdicts to the jail around 8:45pm.

The verdicts will be read out to the convicts.

Earlier at 7:24pm, a three-member team, led by Supreme Court (SC) deputy registrar Arunabh Chakrabarti brought the verdicts to the ICT.

Later, the verdicts sent to Dhaka Central Jail and set to be read out the convicts Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam made the development while talking to journalists in the evening.

Earlier in the day, the SC registrar general office published the verdicts of review petitions following the signatures of Chief Justice SK Sinha and three other justices Nazmun Ara Sultana, Syed Mahmud Hossain and Hasan Foez Siddique on the verdict.

On November 18, the Appellate Division of SC upheld the ICT death sentences for Chowdhury and Mujahid for their respective crimes during the country’s war of independence in 1971.
