DHAKA: Awami League-backed candidate Saira Mohsin, wife of late Social Welfare Minister Syed Mohsin Ali, has been elected uncontested in the by-elction of Moulvibazar-3 constituency.

Regional Election Officer SM Ezharul Haque, also returning officer of the election, announced the unofficial result around 11:00am Monday.

Of the nomination papers of five persons, the Election Commission (EC) four were declared void.

They are Md Khurshid (independent candidate), Sohel Ahmed (independent candidate), Md Ashraf Hussain of BNF (Bangladesh Nationalist Front) and Syed Nurul Haque of Jatiya Party (Ershad).

Earlier on September 14, Syed Mohsin Ali, who was elected MP from Moulvibazar-3 constituency, had died at a Singapore hospital. The seat fell vacant following his death. 

Later, the election commission fixed December 8 as voting day of the by-polls.
