DHAKA: After arranging polls in 233 municipals in the country ‘successfully’, the Election Commission (EC) has been chalking the plan to arrange Union Parisad (UP) elections.

Following the amendments brought in the electoral laws by the government, EC is preparing to arrange UP elections in party lines as well.

EC high-ups told banglanews that they are going to arrange voting in almost 4,500 Union Parisads.

They also said the EC was taking preparations for arranging elections in more than 200 Ups’ in 21 upazilas in March this year.

The officials further said that the schedule for the first phase of the election could be declared at the end of February.

EC secretary Sirajul Islam has told banglanews that, “Local Government Division has sent a list of 4,000 UP.  The election will be held considering the expiration of their terms”.
