BNP candidate wins in Singair municipality

MANIKGANJ: BNP mayoral candidate advocate Khorshed Alam Bhuiyan has been elected unofficially in Singair municipality election on Thursday (January 7).

The winning candidate bagged 6,873 votes while his closest contestant Awami League rebel candidate Mir Shahjahan (with Jug symbol) secured 4,828 votes.

Returning officer M Munir Hossain Khan declared the results around 7:00pm.

People cast their votes from 8:00am to 4:00pm at 10 voting centers in nine wards of Singair municipality in Manikganj district amid tight security.

However, six candidates vied for mayoral post while 34 for councilors and seven women for female councilor posts.

Additional law enforcers had been deployed in the polls area to thwart any untoward situation.

The poll in Singair municipality was shifted to January 7 due to a writ petition filed with the High Court over inconsistencies in voter list and complexities over demarcating boundary.
