DHAKA: War criminal Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Delwar Hossain Sayedee will appeal for reviewing the verdict of his lifelong imprisonment seeking acquittal from charges after the prosecution had appealed on Tuesday.
The Jamaat leader made the decision after his lawyers went to meet him at Dhaka Central Jail (Part-1) in Kashimpur of Gazipur district on Wednesday.
Sayedee’s lawyers were Advocate Tajul Islam, Advocate Saifur Rahman, Advocate Yusuf Ali and Advocate Matiur Rahman Akand.
Advocate Saifur Rahman disclosed the matter as the lawyers were allowed to meet the convict this afternoon.
On February 28, 2013, Delwar Hossain Sayeede was found guilty of genocide, rape and religious persecution and the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 awarded him death penalty.
On March 28 of the year, he filed an appeal with the SC seeking acquitted on all charges.
On the same day, the government also submitted a separate appeal seeking Sayedee’s punishment in all the eight charges.
Later on September 17 in 2014, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) gave its judgment that commuted the war criminal’s death sentence to imprisonment until death.
On December 31 in 2015, SC released full verdict that commuted war criminal Sayedee’s death sentence to imprisonment until death.
