BNP to join UP elections

DHAKA: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is ready to participate in the upcoming Union Parisad elections, scheduled to begin from March 22 in a partisan manner.

Informing the matter, BNP standing committee member lieutenant general (retd) Mahbubur Rahman urged the Election Commission to create environment for holding the election in free and fair manner.

He was addressing a discussion arranged by Bangladesh Sanskritik Academy at Bangladesh Photo Journalists Association on Friday (February 12).
 
Mahbubur Rahman said, ‘In the neighboring India, Election Commissioner is considered as super prime minister. But Election Commissioner of Bangladesh failed to achieve such confidence of people for his ‘controversial activities’.

Krishak Dal joint general secretary Shahjahan Mia Samrat, NAP joint secretary general Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan, Jasas former president Jafar Ulalh Chowhury, Bangladesh Federal Journalist Union publicity secretary Jakir Hossian were present at the program, with BNP leader Humayum Kabir Bepari in the chair.

Elections for 4275 Union Parisads (UP) will be held in six phases, starting from March 22.

Election Commissioner M Shah Newaz announced the polls schedule on Thursday.
