DHAKA: As many as 62 chairmen have been elected uncontested in the first phase of upcoming Union Parisad elections.
Senior secretary Farhad Hossian of Election Commission (EC) management department informed the matter to banglanews on Sunday (March 6).
He said 3,034 candidates will vie chairman posts in 732 union in the first phase. Of them, independent candidates are 1,246. Awami League candidate 731, BNP 613, Jatiya Party, 127, JSD 29, Bikalpadhara Bangladesh 4, Workers party 23, Jatiya Party (JP) 17, BNF 7, Communist Party 4, Tarikat Federation 1, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam 1, Islami Andolon Bangladesh 227, Bangladesh National Awami Party 3 and others 1.
Of them, 62 have been elected unopposed as UP chairmen.
Secretary Farhad Hossian said the EC election management unit has prepared a report with information sent from field level for last two day.
The voting will be held in 732 union parisads in the first phase on March 22.
