DHAKA: BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir commented that senior journalist Shafik Rehman was arrested to hide government’s corruption, Tonu murder and Bangladesh Bank (BB) reserve heist, among other issues.
The BNP leader made the remark at a protest program held at Sagor-Runi Auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity in city’s Shegun Bagicha area on Wednesday (April 20).
He said that the government always tries to hide major crimes by creating another major issue. It is also trying to muzzle people, Mirza Fakhrul opined.
He also demanded the government to immediately release journalists Shafik Rehman, Mahmudur Rahman and Shawkat Mahmud.
National People’s Party organized the program, chaired by its president Dr Faridduzzaman Farhad.
BNP’s law affairs secretary Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Jatiya Party (Zafar) general secretary Mustafa Kamal Haidar, NAP Bhashani chairman advocates Azahar, among others, also spoke at the meeting.
