AL gets 47pc vote, BNP 19pc

DHAKA: Ruling Awami League candidates have managed to get over 47 percent of total votes cast while BNP candidates bagged only around 19 percent in the recently ended union parishad polls in six phases.

The independent candidates got around 30 percent of votes.

After receiving information from the field level, the election commission (EC) prepared a report about the polls.

The report said a total of 4,104 polls went into polls. As many as 50,560,259 out of 65,951,388 voters exercised their franchise rights in the polls. The rate of voter turnout was 76 percent.

Of those, 20,016,494 voters cast votes for Awami League which is 47.10 percent whereas the BNP candidates got 9,477,612 votes which is 18.74 percent.

As many as 15,061,147 (29.78 percent) voters cast votes in favour of independent candidates.

Main opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad Jatiya Party (JP) got 1,012,971 votes which is a little more than two percent of total turnout.

Rest of the parties got 2.38 percent votes.

Of the total 4,104 UPs, AL won in 2,667 seats, BNP won in 367 seats, independent candidates got 888 seats, JP in 57, JASAD in eight, Jatiya Party-JP in five seats, Workers Party and Islami Andolon Bangladesh each won in three UPs each.

Besides, Jamiat e Ulama e Islam Bangladesh and Bangladesh Jaker Party got one seat each.

Twenty one political failed to win in any union parishads.

Meanwhile, wishing anonymity, an EC deputy-secretary told banglanews that re-voting in postponed centers of 104 UPs will be held after the eid-ul-fitr.

EC election management branch senior secretary Farhad Hossain told that they are yet to coordinate the results of some UPs in Rangamati district.

Minor changes may come in the figure after that, he added.
