Jamaat’s dawn-to-dusk hartal underway

DHAKA: A dawn-to-dusk hartal, enforced by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islam protesting the death sentence of its leader Mir Quasem Ali upheld by the Supreme Court, is underway across the country from Wednesday morning (August 31).

However, the hartal was seen ineffective as many passenger buses, microbuses, cars and other vehicles are plying like other busy days.

Office goers also were seen suffering traffic jam, a regular feature of Dhaka, at Natun Bazar, Badda, Rampura, Malibagh, Kakrail, Gulistan, Shahbagh, Karwan Bazar, Banani and other main spots in the morning.

Besides, no procession or picketers were seen on roads in support of the hartal.

On Tuesday (August 30), the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court dismissed the review petition and upheld the death penalty of Jamaat leader Mir Quasem Ali for his crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.
