DHAKA: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami observed a dawn-to-dusk hartal across the country from Wednesday morning (August 31).
They imposed the strike as a protest of the death sentence of its leader Mir Quasem Ali upheld by the Supreme Court.
However, the hartal was seen ineffective as vehicular movements were as usual across the country.
Moreover, office-goers were seen suffering traffic jam, a regular feature of Dhaka, at Natun Bazar, Badda, Rampura, Malibagh, Kakrail, Gulistan, Shahbagh, Karwan Bazar, Banani and other main spots in the day.
Besides, no procession or picketers were seen on roads in support of the hartal.
Earlier on August 30, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court dismissed the review petition and upheld the death penalty of Jamaat leader Mir Quasem Ali for his crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.
