Govt extends Khaleda’s release for 6 months BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia

The government has extended for six months the suspension of the jail sentence of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Earlier the government released Khaleda from jail custody by suspending her jail sentence for six months with an executive order.

The home ministry issued a gazette notification to this effect on Tuesday.

The notification said Khaleda Zia will receive treatment at her home and she cannot go out of the country during this period.

In the notification, the ministry said the government has suspended the jail sentence of Khaleda Zia as per Section 401(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) following the legal opinion of the law ministry.

Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s family earlier submitted another application for extending the release date further.

Khaleda Zia had been in jail since February 8, 2018, the day she was convicted in a graft case.

She was shifted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital on April 1, 2019 and received treatment there till March this year.

On March 25 this year, Khaleda’s sentence has been suspended for six months and currently she is staying in her Gulshan house.
