Haji Salim's son Irfan jailed for 18 months

A mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) sentenced Irfan Salim, a councilor of ward 30 of Dhaka South City Corporation and son of Dhaka-7 lawmaker Haji Mohammad Salim, to 18 months imprisonment for possessing liquor and illegal electronic devices including walkie-talkie sets.

The mobile court also sentenced Irfan's bodyguard Mohammad Zahid to six months imprisonment for carrying walkie-talkie.

RAB (legal and media wing) Director Lt Col Ashique Billah confirmed the news to reporters on Monday evening.

Besides, two cases- under Arms and Narcotic Acts- will be filed against them, he said.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), in a drive, recovered foreign liquor, beer, firearm and illegal wireless communication devises from the residence of Irfan Salim, who was taken into custody for beating up a Navy officer and his wife last night.

RAB members, led by Executive Magistrate Sarwar Alam, conducted a raid at Haji Salim's residence in Old Dhaka around 12:30 pm Monday after a case was filed by victim Navy Official Wasif Ahmed Khan.

Irfan Salim and his bodyguard Zahid were taken into RAB custody.

During the drive, law enforcers recovered a firearm and huge stock of liquor along with illegal electronic communication devices including walkie-talkie sets.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sufiyan remanded Erfan’s driver Mizanur, a co-accused in the case who was arrested earlier.

On Monday morning, victim Navy official Lt Wasif Ahmed Khan filed the case with Dhanmondi police station.

According to case statements, Wasif along with wife was going to his destination by a motorcycle Sunday evening. As the vehicle of Haji Salim hit the motorbike at Kalabagan intersection area, he stopped the vehicle and confronted its driver and passengers.

Wasif also disclosed his identity being an officer of Bangladesh Navy.  At one stage, some people came out the vehicle and started beating Lt Wasif and verbally abused his wife as she protested the incident.

Bystanders and commuters rushed to the spot and captured a video of whole incident by mobile phone. The video went viral on social media.
